Better Shape Up

These photos pretty much speak for themselves. But I'm going to tell you about it anyway.

Early Saturday morning I braved the cold, wind, and rain to trek down to midtown for the Shape Pop Up Body Shop. A storefront on 5th Avenue was transformed into a fitness studio and workout-gear showroom to celebrate the November issue of Shape magazine and its cover girl, Lea Michele. The Body Shop featured four workout studios with classes running throughout the day. In between classes you could check out gear like sneakers and Movemeant Foundation patterned leggings, strike a pose in the Instagram photo booth, relax with a complementary massage, and rack up the swag--Simple productions, St. Ives apricot scrub, Luna bar samples, and more.

For $10 I signed up for the first class of the day: meditation. (I actually thought it was going to be more of a yoga class, but it was only 30 minutes, and it was pretty interesting.) I even recognized a fellow classmate--from Instagram! Yoga professional Kristin McGee. I have one of her workout DVDs she made with former Real Housewife and NYT Bestselling author Bethenny Frankel.

Meditation was at 9:00, and the Facebook Live interview with Lea Michele wasn't until 12:15, so I had some time to kill. I got a massage, picked up my gift bag, and met a few fellow workout enthusiasts. But the grand finale--and one of the reasons I attended the event--was seeing Lea Michele onstage talking with the deputy editor of Shape. I didn't get to meet her or take a photo with her or get her to sign my copy of the magazine, but being in the same room with her and hearing what she had to say about her outlook on health and fitness and success was more than enough. It sounds cheesy, I know, but Lea is such an inspiration. As much as she loves to workout (including yoga, Pilates, and Soul Cycle), she also loves cheese. It's possible we were separated at birth. A native New Yorker, Lea loves the city even though she currently lives in LA. And she's a homebody, like me, and considers watching Netflix among her top hobbies.

Most of the people at the interview were die-hard fans. One of them had a panic attack and cried as soon as she saw Lea. Several nearly ran me over getting through the doors. I'm a fan, but I'm no fanatic. While they were filming every second of the interview and trying to get the best angle for a selfie with Lea, I was actually listening to what Lea and the editor had to say. Because it wasn't fluff. It was good advice.

Recently I was reminded how much I love to dance. I'm not, nor have I ever been, a gym rat. I want to be a better runner than I am, but I prefer yoga to body pump, Pilates to Jazzercise. Something Lea said during the interview struck a nerve: Working out and eating well isn't just about looking good; it's about feeling good. I admit I haven't been feeling great since I haven't been keeping up with a consistent workout routine. But I think I just needed to find the right class and the right motivation. Which I have, and it's only been a week, but I call tell a difference.

Being able to witness Lea Michele's Shape interview was no coincidence; there was a message for me. Message received. It's time to shape up, in and out of the gym.
