Hallo-Wine?

I bet you're wondering how kids who live in New York celebrate Halloween. With the exception of the offspring of well-to-do Brooklynites living in an historic semidetached brownstone, most of the city's children do not have access to door-to-door neighborhood trick-or-treating that suburban dwellers enjoy. Well, what New Yorkers lack in mail boxes and front walks, we make up for in storefronts and apartment hallways.

Walking home from work today I witnessed the Upper East Side's version of Halloween: stores like Pottery Barn Kids and Gymboree had employees dressed as Catwoman and Superman handing out bite-size candy bars to kids impersonating Harry Potter, fairy unicorns, and (my favorite) Dorothy. More often than not these trick-or-treaters were accompanied by their equally outfitted parents. Spotted: a family of five with the dad as a banana, twin boys as Dracula (apparently they wanted to be the same thing this year), and a mother with her infant dressed as Leia and Yoda, respectively.

I've seen it all in this city: the Joker, the creepy guy from V for Vendetta, the Fairly Odd Parents, Tigger, Elmo, a handful of Britney Spears-es, the Incredibles, Snapchat filters. Everything goes on Halloween.

My big, exciting Halloween plans? Cook dinner, enjoy a glass of wine, catch up on Once Upon a Time, and try not to die laughing looking at the amazing pet costumes overwhelming my Instagram feed. I may be biased, but I'm pretty sure my family's pets win the award for best costume this year. Tied for first place, Knox the Minion and Fire Chief Harley. Honorable Mention goes to Rory the Halloween ballerina (she would have scored higher if the tutu had fit--it was a small dog size--and if she'd kept it on for more than a few seconds before trying to eat it).

Maybe next year I'll put more effort into celebrating All Hallows' Eve. This year, I'll stick with celebrating Hallo-Wine.
