New President, New Chapter

Today, America got a new president. Which means today, America starts a new chapter in history. Obviously the country is divided--in many cases, outspokenly so--about our new leader. No matter who you voted for or what you believe, this is reality, and we should all put aside our differences and be optimistic about the next four (and possibly eight) years.

Today's inauguration made me think about what this new chapter means for me. Even more so than the New Year, today is an opportunity to reevaluate my life, my habits, my beliefs, and my relationships. It's easy to fall into the same patterns because it's comfortable and easy. But who wants to live a life that's just comfortable and easy? I certainly didn't move to New York (twice) to lead a comfortable, easy life. I came for a challenge and for an adventure. Something I feel like I've lost sight of these past few weeks.

Today my eyes were opened to the possibility of starting over, changing habits, and working towards the person I always imagined I'd be by the time I was 27 and living in New York City. I've accomplished a lot so far; I've also let a lot of things I love fall to the back burner. No more.

Starting tomorrow, I'm making a change. I'm heading back to the gym and committing to a regular weekly routine, including the dance class that I fell in love with last fall. I'm going to be more creative with cooking and meal planning--trying new recipes instead of always making the same thing every night (namely, chicken and broccoli). I'm going to go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier. I'm going to spend more time outside, even when it's the middle of winter. I'm going to make time for friends and meeting new people. I'm going to keep my apartment clean all the time, not just when I'm expecting company. I'm going to get rid of things I don't need, don't use, don't wear, and just don't like. I'm going to redecorate my patio so that it's a place I actually want to spend time in the warmer seasons. And I'm going to plan some inexpensive but fun out-of-town trips and get to know the northeast outside of Manhattan.

It's not a resolution. It's a new chapter, and I'm optimistic that it will be the best chapter yet.
